Upon sending a manuscript out the (electronic) door

Dear Book,

I’m not saying we should break up. I’m just saying we need some time apart, that’s all.

You should see other people. I should stare at some walls, catch up on some sleep, answer my email, maybe see to some neglected household repairs.

No, no, of course I won’t forget you. How could I ever forget the way you broke my heart in chapters 13 and 17? And I’ll always remember fondly the beautiful meltdown we had over chapter 11.

I like you. I do. I’ll be back together in time for your revision letter, I promise.

In the meantime, just remember: It’s not you, it’s me.

Sincerely,

Me

P.S. Well, okay, maybe it’s both of us.

P.P.S. Well, sure, I might see other stories while you’re gone. That shouldn’t surprise you. You’re a sequel. You’ve always known you weren’t my first.
