A few days ago someone on my reading list reviewed a book with words to the effect of “this book is pure wish fulfillment, but the wishes being fulfilled aren’t mine.” I found myself thinking about that this weekend as I read a book for which I realized the wishes being fulfilled were pretty much exactly mine. 🙂
Caitlin Brennan’s (aka dancinghorse‘s) middle grade House of the Star is about magical world-crossing horses, and about the magic riding school where students dream of being deemed worthy to ride them. It’s set in the Arizona desert. And also a little bit in Faerie.
Yeah. Needless to say, this was very much my sort of book. It made my inner horse-loving 11-year-old who always dreamed of escaping to other worlds very happy. It made my outer adult fantasy reading self (who really isn’t all that different from my inner 11-year-old when it comes right down to it) pretty happy, too. I put off various useful household tasks in order to finish it, in the way that one does.
Due out late fall. Very much worth keeping an eye out for. 🙂
