In which the exploratory drafts remain exploratory

After the usual brief hope that my writing process had magically changed, it’s sinking in that yes, I do still have to start off by writing the entirely wrong book in order to then write the right one.

It works, it adds layers, it tells me things I know for later drafts, and it sure beats sitting around fretting and writing nothing at all. But even so, every book, there’s that fleeting illusion that maybe–maybe–this book will be one of the easy ones, a gift book, after all.

But it won’t be, so … back to work!
