The Underneath, by Kathi Appelt

This book. This book that has so much darkness, the darkness of hidden places beneath old houses and the workings of people’s hearts both, yet through all the dark lets the glimmering light shine through.

This book that is somehow a mix of heartwarming animal story and deep, deep mythology, and manages to be true to both. This book goes nowhere unexpected, but sometimes that isn’t the point. The point is that where this book does go, it goes so very well.

Recommended for language junkies, and also for, actually, fantasy readers, the sort who would never think to pick up something that looks just like those animal stories they read in school, and might not realize that this is a story with a fair share of (quiet) magic as well.
