Gerald Ford is the first president I have any memory of being president. Which meant that, for a time, it felt to me like he’d been president forever, and his losing his one election seemed quite the upset–and it seemed a little strange, too, that someone new would be president.
I have dimmer memories of Watergate (men in suits talking too much making television and the adults around me both boring, boring, boring), but no memory at all of Richard Nixon as a current president, rather than as a distant historical figure.
