Anyone interested in the business of getting an entire novel down into a few compelling sentences could do worse than to read Miss Snark this week. She’s critiquing some 700 folks’ hooks for their novels. Interesting, as always, to see how one can tell, in a sentence or two, whether the hook is working.
Miss Snark talks about the importance of focus, and she’s right. But I’ve noticed something else. The best hooks, so far at least (100 down, 600 to go) also have voice.
