This month’s story is “Steel Penny.”
For one year, in 1943, pennies were made of steel rather than copper, a fact that’s fascinated me ever since I was a kid. I don’t remember how I managed to find a steel penny of my own, but I’ve hung onto it ever since.
I also don’t remember when I first learned that in stories, the Faerie folk often have strong feelings about iron and steel. But I do remember that one day looking my steel penny and thinking of those stories.
