The play of light and dark

lnhammer and I were talking last night about the balance of light and dark in fiction, since most stories need both.

I realized that I usually (Tiernay West is an exception here), start with the dark when writing a story, and then look for the places where the light shows through that dark.

While lnhammer usually starts with the light bits, and then rims them with, or sets them against a backdrop of, dark.

How do you all handle the play of light and dark in your writing? How do you like to see it handled in your reading?

When, for you, is there too much of one or the other?
