The three movies work much better both together, and together in extended editions. Some lovely, lovely stuff there. And my objections now are mostly in the realm of personal preference, rather than of pacing being off, character arcs not being followed through, and so on.
None of which changes the fact that these things were off in the movie that was the theatrical release. But the movie that was the extended edition came much closer to being perfect.
