CDC’s figure on obesity-related deaths to be revised

Revised down, though it’s not yet clear by how much.

Not the first time, in one way or another, that this country has jumped to the conclusion that being overweight is worse than it is.

The trouble is, I think figures like this push the focus toward fad diets (Atkins, anyone?) and dangerous surgeries, and away from things that can result in being healthier regardless of weight: more physical activity, say.

Obesity being on the rise is troubling. But I’m more troubled by our attitudes towards being overweight. We just can’t seem to accept, as a society, that there are ways to be healthy and beautiful and morally virtuous while still being heavy.
