I especially like his understanding of how fantasy and YA both work, and how they are both borderlands. Maybe that’s why writing YA fantasy is so appealing. (Tiernay West, on the other hand, does not exist in a borderland, for all that she thinks she does–middle grade protagonists are, I think, a little more firmly settled into being who they are even if their lives are changing.)
