When I reinstalled The Sims on my machine, I once again avoided The Sims Online, because of cost and the time sink both.

Still, I was both amused and disconcerted by this article, about a sort of Sims mafia taking over the online game.

Apparently there was a power vacuum, and Sims stepped in to fill it.
